Donating While on Birth Control

You can donate eggs, even if you are on birth control (the Pill or Patch). If you are not on the Pill, you may be asked to take the Pill to help regulate your cycle. If you are taking Depo Provera, you may be asked to stop this method of birth control. If you have had a tubal ligation or an IUD, you may still be able to donate.

Contracts

The contracts drafted on your behalf show that you agree to follow the terms and conditions of the egg donor program. They also outline compensation for the egg donation. A surrogacy attorney at Steven H. Snyder & Associates also drafts additional compensation clauses in the egg donor contract. Part of your compensation, depending on the surrogacy center you use, may include travel expenses and doctors’ visits.

A contract may also spell out risks involved in the egg donation process. Some risks include:

  • Unknown allergic reaction to one or more of the medications
  • A small risk of a pelvic infection following the procedure (usually only in women who have a history of pelvic infections, but it can happen to anyone)
  • The injuring of a blood vessel with a needle

The contract sets out terms as to insurance—whether the clinic provides and pays for all visits and procedures or if surrogacy insurance is provided on your behalf.

Donations

Egg donations may or may not be anonymous. If you choose to remain anonymous, the egg donation contract is drafted so that you remain anonymous. If you prefer to participate in a “known donor” program, make sure your wishes are conveyed to the attorney drafting or reviewing your egg donation contracts.
